Mocality’s crowdsourcing visualisation by Stefan
Erik Hersman has a very nice piece on Mocality over at whiteafrican.com. Since we launched our crowdsourcing application, enabling anyone in Nairobi to get paid via M-Pesa to contribute to our database, we’ve been using an adapted version of FlowingData’s OpenStreetMap-based WalMart growth visualization tool to track how the crowd (and our ambassador team) are doing with adding businesses to the database. It shows the growth in our database, plotted on a map, since our launch last May. You can see how ambassadors initially targeted different areas of Nairobi, and how the crowd, after about day 330, has greatly accelerated the listing of businesses. We had to tweak the code somewhat to maintain performance with the volume of datapoints, but I find it mesmerising to watch.

As an agent i noticed that most businesses have different phone numbers (this can even be shown from their business cards). Now, it’s difficult to know the one number that another agent added so that you verify and earn on it. If you verify a correct business number, you are not paid as long as it does not coincide with what another agent added. For such a case, a moderator is supposed to confirm the number before you are paid.
My question: How long does it take a moderator to verify such information?
I have such 8 pending cases which are about 2 weeks old now and no action has been taken. Am afraid if i continue doing that, my account may be suspended. Is your system effective?
Thanks for your comment. It’s been passed along to our customer support team
who will get back to you ASAP on that. In future, if you have any questions
or queries, please send them to info@mocality.com.
